Privacy policy
Last updated: 28 October 2026
1. About this policy
This policy explains how Hopalong ("Hopalong", "we", "us" or "our") collects, holds, uses and discloses personal information when you use the website at www.myhopalong.com.au and its day planner (together, the "Service").
We handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), including the Australian Privacy Principles, and, for people in New Zealand, the Privacy Act 2020 (NZ) and its Information Privacy Principles. In this policy, "personal information" means information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable.
By using the Service you acknowledge that your information will be handled as described in this policy. If you do not agree with it, please do not use the Service or send us your information.
2. The short version
- You do not need an account, and we do not ask for your name to use the planner.
- We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and we do not sell, rent or trade personal information.
- Your planner answers and saved plans stay in your browser on your device. We cannot see them.
- If you contact us, we receive the details you send and use them to reply.
- Our website host keeps short-lived technical logs, as all websites do.
3. Information we collect
3.1 Information you give us
If you use our contact form or email us, we collect your name, email address, the topic you choose, the content of your message and anything else you choose to include. Please do not send us sensitive information (such as health information) or information about other people unless it is necessary for your enquiry.
3.2 Technical information
When you visit the Service, our hosting provider automatically records standard server and security logs. These may include your IP address, browser and device type, the pages requested, the referring page, and the date and time of each request. We use this information only to deliver the Service, keep it secure, prevent abuse and fix faults. We do not use it to build a profile of you or to identify you, except where needed to investigate misuse or where required by law.
3.3 Information we do not collect
We do not collect payment details, government identifiers, or the plans you build. We do not knowingly collect sensitive information.
4. Information kept on your device
- Planner answers and saved days. These are stored in your browser's local storage so you can reopen them. They are not sent to us. You can delete them at any time by clearing your browser's site data for this website.
- City data. Your browser downloads and stores our list of places so the planner keeps working without a connection. It contains no personal information.
- Your location. If you tap "Start from me", your browser asks for permission to share your location. If you allow it, your location is used on your device to pick the nearest city and suburb. It is not sent to us. If you then open your route in Google Maps or share your plan, your starting coordinates are included in that link and are handled by the service you open.
Local storage is not a cookie, and the Service does not set cookies. If we ever introduce cookies or analytics, we will update this policy first.
5. How we use personal information
We use personal information only for the purposes for which it was collected, or for related purposes you would reasonably expect, namely:
- to reply to your enquiry and keep a record of our correspondence;
- to correct or improve place information when you tell us something has changed;
- to consider partnership, advertising or press enquiries you send us;
- to operate, secure and maintain the Service, and to detect and prevent spam, fraud and abuse; and
- to comply with our legal obligations and to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
We do not send marketing emails. We will not add you to a mailing list unless you ask us to.
We do not use personal information to make automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you. The planner builds suggestions from the answers you give, on your own device.
6. Who we share it with
We disclose personal information only to the following, and only as far as needed:
- Our service providers. Netlify, Inc. hosts the Service, keeps its server logs, and receives and stores contact form messages (including through its spam filtering). Our email provider receives form notifications and our correspondence with you [to confirm: the provider for admin@myhopalong.com]. These providers act on our behalf and are not permitted to use your information for their own purposes.
- Professional advisers, such as lawyers and accountants, where needed.
- Authorities, where we are required or authorised by law, or where we reasonably believe disclosure is necessary to lessen or prevent a serious threat to someone's life, health or safety.
- A buyer or successor of all or part of our business, who will be bound to handle your information consistently with this policy.
7. Overseas disclosure
Netlify, Inc. is based in the United States, and its servers and content delivery network operate in several countries, including the United States. Your information may therefore be stored or processed outside Australia and New Zealand. We take reasonable steps to ensure our providers handle personal information in a way that is consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles and the New Zealand Information Privacy Principles, including by using providers that maintain recognised security and privacy commitments. By using the contact form, you acknowledge that your information will be sent overseas for these purposes.
8. Other websites and services
The Service links to third-party services, including Google Maps, Google Calendar, Outlook, WhatsApp, Facebook, X, Telegram, your email app, and the websites of places we list. When you use these links, you leave our Service, and the information you share (such as your plan or starting location) is handled under that provider's own privacy policy. We are not responsible for their practices.
9. Storage, security and retention
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. All connections to the Service are encrypted (HTTPS), access to our accounts is restricted to people who need it, and we hold as little personal information as we can. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
We keep contact form messages and correspondence for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry and for up to two years afterwards, unless the law requires us to keep them longer [to confirm]. When we no longer need personal information, we take reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify it. Server logs are kept by our hosting provider for a limited period under its own retention settings.
10. Data breaches
If a data breach involving your personal information is likely to result in serious harm, we will notify you and the relevant regulator as required by the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme in Australia or the Privacy Act 2020 in New Zealand.
11. Anonymity
You can use the planner without telling us who you are. If you contact us, you can use a pseudonym where practicable, but we need a working email address to reply.
12. Children
The Service is intended for general audiences and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
13. Accessing and correcting your information
You may ask for access to the personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it. Email us at admin@myhopalong.com. We will respond within a reasonable time, and in any case within 30 days for Australian requests and 20 working days for New Zealand requests. We may need to confirm your identity first. We do not charge for a request. If we refuse a request, we will tell you why, as far as the law allows, and how to complain.
14. Complaints
If you have a concern about how we have handled your personal information, please email us first at admin@myhopalong.com with the details. We will acknowledge your complaint within 7 days and aim to resolve it within 30 days.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to:
- in Australia, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au, 1300 363 992); or
- in New Zealand, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (privacy.org.nz, 0800 803 909).
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time, for example if the Service or the law changes. We will post the updated policy on this page with a new "Last updated" date. If a change materially affects how we handle personal information you have already given us, we will take reasonable steps to tell you.
